Keep the kick’s body and give its leading edge a different texture.
-
Get the body right first.
Start with a kick you like and listen to its low end. Leave the main Wave source in place. Open the kick’s Click tab and drop in a short recording with an attack you want to borrow.
The Wave slot acts as the voice’s source. The Click slot layers a recording over it, so this is the one to use when you want to keep the synthesised body.
-
Pick the useful part.
Move Start to the beginning of the attack. Shape the Click envelope over the waveform so the part you want comes through and the rest falls away. This envelope follows the sample’s own timeline, rather than the main voice’s Length.
-
Keep the low end in the body.
Raise the Click layer’s HP until unwanted rumble drops away. Bring its Amt up from quiet while the whole kick plays. Listen for the attack becoming easier to hear without the sample taking over the hit.
-
Choose whether the attack follows the notes.
Use the Click Pitch control to change the sample’s speed: up makes it shorter and higher, down makes it longer and lower. Leave the padlock closed for a consistent attack as you play different notes. Unlock it if you want the click’s pitch to follow the keyboard.
-
Listen to the combined kick.
Try a little Tone in the Amp tab for more drive. Tone reaches both the main sound and the click; Crush processes their combined output.
